Bath Folk Club Singers Group, Widcombe Social Club, Widcombe Hill BA2 6AA
(Louise 078339 41982, info AT nu-music.com, www.inu-music.com)
3rd Wednesday of the month, 8pm 10pm. £3 for singers and £4 for listeners.

Mostly unaccompanied singing but acoustic accompaniment instruments are welcome.
Hosted by Nancy Kerr with some help from Louise Baxter (from Inu), Jennifer
Crook and Sue Hart (from Baka Beyond). They are all singers with a wealth of
experience behind them and will be using this night to share songs and
traditions and to get everybody singing together. It's a nice, friendly, clean
venue with a really nice sound and cheap beer. The money raised will go
towards the running costs of Bath Folk Club.

Altered
=======

The session at the Royal Oak, Dorchester Hill, Milborne St Andrew will be week
earlier this month, to avoid the bank holiday. That makes it the 19th May.
Back to usual next time.

Homeless
========

The Tuesday night American old time session at the Bell at Creech St Michael is
without venue as the pub has closed. There's a possibility we'll be at the
Merry Monk in Monkton Heathfield but we're waiting for the 'OK' from the
landlord.

The David Hall, South Petherton

Tanglefoot

The Canadian group, Tanglefoot, is appearing for the fourth time at The David
Hall and, as always, the evening is expected to be a rip-roaring success!
With over 20 years of performing under their belt, this Canadian roots
institution is stronger than ever and now features Sandra Swannell the first
female ever to join the group - on violin and viola.

This a thunderous live band with a reputation for spectacular vocal harmonies.
It is also a band of adept songwriters who specialize in portraying their
homeland through intelligent, well-written folk-influenced songs played with
hell-bent, rampaging abandon.

Come and hear why the Vancouver Folk Music Bulletin said Tanglefoot is
"...guaranteed to pull you out of whatever slump you're in!"

The David Hall, South Petherton

Jez Lowe & The Bad Pennies.

Jez Lowes band, The Bad Pennies, have been one of the high points on the
British and international folk scene for over a decade.

On fiddle and duet vocals is Kate Bramley, from York. With her distinctive
voice and relaxed fiddle style, Kate has been touring with the band for nearly
seven years.
Champion piper Andy May, from Gateshead on Tyne, joined the band in 2002,

delicious Celtic twist to the band sound. His acclaimed debut album featured
none other than Kathryn Tickell and cemented his reputation as one of the
young leading lights of the UK folk scene.
Anew addition to the band in 2006 is David de la Haye, on bass. He is one of
the best players on the Newcastle scene and tours internationally with Shona
Mooney, winner of the BBC Young Tradition Award 2005.
The current line-up has toured as far afield as the USA, Canada, New Zealand
and Australia, and had a hectic gig and concert schedule in the UK, Holland,
Switzerland and Austria. Its great to welcome them to The David Hall!

A special charity concert raising funds for The Meningitis Trust

John Kirkpatrick and The Stanchester Quire

This is a special charity concert raising funds for The Meningitis Trust.
The Trust helps to support in so many different ways all those who have
suffered from this terrible disease. The proceeds from this concert will go
to The Meningitis Trust to help with its valuable work to rebuild shattered
lives.

We are delighted that the legendary Master of Squeeze John Kirkpatrick will be
headlining the concert.
Much has been written of John's superb musicianship, songwriting, arranging of
music and dance.
It has been written of him "he is the best squeezebox player on this planet",
and for many he is the complete folk artist.
The Stanchester Quire, under the directorship of Eddie Upton, will be making a
major contribution to the evening. The Quire have sung several times with John
Kirkpatrick including concerts at the Brewhouse and Merlin Theatres and at the
Cecil Sharp Centenary at Hambridge.
We are very pleased that two local Somerset artists have donated a work of art
each, to be raffled in a special draw.

The David Hall, South Petherton

Tim Van Eyken Trio

Those who saw Tim van Eyken win the 1998 BBC Young Folk Award knew there would
be a glittering career ahead of this young musician with a passion for
traditional English music.

His career as a solo artist looked promising until an offer came along that he
just couldnt refuse: Tim was invited to become the fourth member of
Waterson:Carthy and he recorded and toured the world with them for the next
six years.
Tims album, Stiffs Lovers Holymen Thieves, was released on Topic records in
June 2006 and received spectacular reviews. It was hardly surprising then
that Tim and the band Van Eyken were nominated for no less than four BBC Radio
2 Folk Awards in 2007 and went on to scoop the award for Best Traditional
Track with Barleycorn, amid fierce opposition from Seth Lakeman, Salsa Celtica
and Kris Drever.
Two summers of touring with Van Eyken saw Tim and the band playing at
festivals across the country and in 2007, performing headline shows at two of
the UKs biggest folk events.
Tim then took a giant leap into the world of theatre by landing the part of
Songman in the National Theatres production of Warhorse, with music written
by John Tams. This involved a five-month run at the South Bank and the
realization of a dream come true.
Tim returns to live performance with a line-up that features the considerable
talents of Robert Harbron on guitar (Dr Faustus and English Acoustic
Collective) and Colin Fletcher on bass (Van Eyken).
We are thrilled to welcome Tim back to The David Hall, this time with his
musicians.

Bedouin Jerry Can Band

Bedouin Jerry Can Band (BJB) is a collective of semi-nomadic musicians,
singers, poets, storytellers and coffee grinders from the Egyptian Sinai
desert. The groups songs and poems tell of the exploits of the ancient
Arabian Bedouin tribes through fables of trusty camels, warnings of the
dastardly deeds of sheep rustlers and laments of unrequited love for the girl
with beautiful eyes in the next settlement.
Blending the Simsimiyya (a traditional 5-string Egyptian lyre) with desert
flutes and reed pipes, BJB add infectious Bedouin rhythms on junk percussion,
including ammunition boxes and jerry cans salvaged from the former
battlegrounds of conflicts fought across their homelands during the six day
war in 1967 and the subsequent Israeli occupation of the Sinai.

Mtiebi - Traditional Georgian Male Voice Choir

A rare opportunity to see this internationally-renowned, authentic male voice
choir from the heart of the Caucasian mountains with a repertoire of songs and
music that stretches back over centuries with a song for every occasion -
powerful, exhilarating and uplifting! The Mtiebi choir of ten male voices (and
dancers) bring with them traditional songs, music and dances gathered from all
over Georgia, most collected from rural communities at times when the Soviet
Union was forbidding such an exercise. This collection saved music and song
from possible extinction and Mtiebi would often return to the source village
and perform for the local community as a way of embedding it once again into
rural tradition. Its a living yet ancient culture, and music from hundreds of
years ago exists side by side with more recent material. As well as these
performances, there will be workshops leading to a finale event by community
choirs at the Eden Project in Cornwall in June.
A wonderfully moving performance by these genuine Georgian singers. Audience

Leon Rosselson & Robb Johnson
+ The Heavens

"A highly subversive pairing of two of the left's most eloquent songwriters."
Daily Telegraph

Tonight is a chance to see Leon Rosselson and Robb Johnson together on the
same stage.

Leon Rosselson has been at the forefront of songwriting in Britain for nearly
50 years. His songs range from the lyrical to the satirical, from the personal
to the political, from the humorous to the poignant.

The World Turned Upside Down, about the 17th century Diggers, have become
classics of our time, covered by everyone from Billy Bragg to The Oyster Band.

Robb Johnson is now widely recognised as one of the finest songwriters working
in the UK today. His songs feature in the repertoires of a wide variety of
musicians, from folk legend Roy Bailey to acclaimed cabaret diva Barb Jungr.
While Tony Benn says Johnsons Winter Turns To Spring is his favorite song.

In February 2006 Robb appeared at the Barbican as part of the prestigious BBC
Folk Britannia series, and last year released what many feel is his
strongest and most accessible album to date All That Way For This.

Opening the evening will be The Heavens. Four Dorset based vocalists from
classical, jazz and traditional roots backgrounds who share a passion for
singing and pushing the boundaries of vocal expression. Their songs reflect a
love of music from Africa to America, Eastern Europe to England, Ireland,
Scotland and Wales.

Swanage Amphitheatre

The anticipation is over! It has just been confirmed that the Black Voices
South West residency concert will now be taking place in the atmospheric
open-air settings of Swanage Amphitheatre. Joining Black Voices for the
concert will be combined choirs from all over the South West, all of whom by
then will have taken part in region-wide singing workshops led by Black
Voices to learn the specially commissioned four-part piece of music, entitled
Celebrate.

The open-air Amphitheatre is surrounded by lawns and directly overlooks the
bay at Swanage, providing a suitably stunning backdrop for such a prestigious
event. The one-off concert will take place in the afternoon of Saturday 28th
June, and will be free.

There is a strong tradition of choirs in Dorset, and this very special concert
will be a fantastic occasion to see such a high-profile regional choral
project premiere its grand finale here in Dorset. Dont miss this highly
anticipated opportunity to celebrate with Black Voices!

Tolpuddle

Tolpuddle Martyrs Festival 2008

On February 24th, 1834, six farm labourers from the Dorset village of
Tolpuddle were arrested on a charge of taking part in an 'illegal oath'
ceremony. In the eyes of their masters, however, the real offence was that
they had dared to form a trade union to defend their livelihood. For this they
were sentenced to seven years' transportation to the penal colonies of
Australia. The sentences provoked an immense outcry, leading to the first
great mass trade union protest. The campaign won free pardons and the Martyrs'
return to England. A historic episode in the struggle for trade unionists'
rights in Great Britain

To commemorate the bravery of the martyrs' struggle against poverty and
authority, this annual festival features music, speakers and family
entertainment.
