Couple of pieces of sad news from the wider folk scene
======================================================

Jim Couza, wonderful American hammered dulcimer player died on August 2nd.

Mike Seeger, brother of Peggy and half-brother of Pete died on August 7th.

I saw Jim a couple of times and he really was an amazing musician.
Mike was one of those incredibly influential people who made the folk revival in
America in the 60s possible.

============================================================================

This email arrived from Peter Abbott of Folk in the Vale and I think the best
thing to do is repeat it in full.

	Dear Steve,

I have not been so active since my diagnosis with Prostate Cancer early this
year but I am glad to say after seven weeks of visiting Exeter Hospital on a
daily basis for radiotherapy I am seeing my consultant on 25th August for my
results which we are hoping will be OK.

Notwithstanding this, medical radiology and the Prostate CancerCharity
people have been so kind that Iam doing a series of sponsored StaticBike
rides at Acoustic and Folk venues in the next few months to raise money for
Prostate Cancer Research and to spread the word about the disease amongst
many men who seem to know very little about themselves.

My first ride will be at The Plough at Manstonat the FolkNight on 27th
August where I will be frightening the smokers in their covered encampment.
Several other rides are planned, atFolk in the Vale in September and at
Sturminster Newton Exchange Open Mike night on the last Monday in September.

May I through you ask firstly for sponsorship from my many friends in the
music world and ask any club organisers if I may do a ride at their venue.
The Static Bike set up is not noisy but emits a rather high pitched whine
and would be better suite to an outside shelter or an entrance lobby.

I will attach Sponsorship Forms by return to anyone whoe mails me at
	folkinthevale AT aol.com

	Many thanks
	Peter Abbott

Please support Peter in this venture if you can. I know he and Kate will travel
some distance for a good gig or session, so don't be put off if you think your
venue is too far away!

The Curfew, Bath
================

Changes here. The Sunday Irish session has stopped, at least for the time
being. However, they do have a new 'open mic' session on the first Friday of
the month. The Curfew is at 11, Cleveland Place West, BA1 5DG

Post Office Window!

Having said I dropped the 'for sale and wanted' page on the website due to lack
of use, I've had another request to advertise a musical instrument!

	Hi,
Can you ask your readers if anyone would be interested in a Bandoneon! It's
a huge squeeze box which is almost impossible to play with 36 buttons on one
side and 35 on the other, and bellows stretch beyond my reach. I'm looking
for £250, but that's flexible if I can find someone who will play it.
Contact me via Email maryemersonreed AT btinternet.com
	Thanks, Mary

If you're interested please contact Mary directly.

There will be no SaDFolk emails on September 8th or 15th. Yes, despite the
credit crunch I get two holidays this year!

Event organisers. Please include post codes with your entries if at all
possible. If you don't know the actual code for the building (for example a
church hall) one for the same street will do. More and more people have SatNavs
which rely on post codes and I hope to be able to add some functionality to the
web site which will also use them. Thanks.

His fabulous 2005 album, The Lark Descending, included the 2006 Folk Award-

Chris While & Julie Matthews

Winners of the Best Duo category at the 2009 BBC Folk Awards, having been
nominated no less than eight times, Chris and Julie are welcomed back to the
Hall following their fantastic performance as a duo back in November 2004.
They also perform at the Hall every year as part of the wonderful St. Agnes
Fountain but having them here as a two-some is a real delight.

Chris and Julie met in The Albion Band in 1993 when Julie left the Band and
Chris joined. A year later Julie rejoined the band and she and Chris formed a
part time duo touring Canada as The Women of Albion. After leaving the band
in 1997 they began their full time career as a duo. They have never looked
back, having toured U.K., Europe, Africa, Asia, North America and Australia.
They are not only both outstanding song writers but both possess wonderful
voices and are outstanding musicians. Julie plays guitar, piano, bouzouki,
mandolin, piano accordion and harmonica. Chris plays guitar, bodhran, banjo,
dulcimer and percussion. Their songs cover life as they see it from
industrial wastelands of the North to injustice and freedom, matters of the
heart and everything in between. Their obvious joy of performing together
really brings their songs to life.

Vin Garbutt

Vin Garbutt is one of the best known and most sought after performers on
today's folk scene. A singer/songwriter who is also an accomplished guitarist
and whistle player, Vin is able to mix the poignant with the humorous. Vin's
witty and powerful songs tackle thought-provoking issues which some are
reluctant to tackle, including sexual and racial exploitation, deforestation,
cosmetic surgery and pollution.
Vin has stated that he is not interested in becoming a "big star" as he has
always wished to balance his career with the need for privacy. Vin released
his first album in 1972 and since then has travelled all around the world,
performing continually. The only short break was taken in 2005 when Vin
suffered a serious heart-related illness. After a five month break, Vin
continued to tour as before - and is still doing so today.
In 2001, Vin was winner of the Best Live Act category in the BBC2 Folk
Awards. He was again nominated for this award in 2007.
Vin's songs remain as fresh and vibrant today as when he started, over 40
years ago It's always a pleasure to welcome 'The Man' back to the hall. A
master of his craft, singer of wonderful songs, terrific humourist and
fabulous musician. When Vin comes to town you just know you're in for a great
evening.

A Petherton PIcture Society Film - Morris: A Life with Bells On

Morris: A Life With Bells On, a documentary-style comedy following the
fortunes of a group of dancers, has generated intense excitement on the
internet and on a regional tour of town and village halls in the south west,
where it is set.

It stars high-profile British actors including Derek Jacobi, Naomie Harris,
Greg Wise and Harriet Walter. Its makers believe it could become a British
'sleeper hit' in the tradition of The Full Monty or Billy Elliot. We agree,
it's a hoot and NOT TO BE MISSED ! Cast aside your prejudices, bring your
bells and ribbons and prepare for a really good evening.

PPS is a registered Film Society and therefore membership is
required. However, membership is free of charge and available at all film
showings.

The Town Hall, East Street, Bridport

Graham Moores' "Darkest Dorset"

This October Bridport Museum celebrates its' most successful season in recent
history with a special night of music, magic and martyrs with the "Tolpuddle
Man" himself, Graham Moore.
Graham will illustrate the darker sides of Dorset folklore and history
withhis ownsongs and true talesofsocial history.
Recently Graham has been touring festivals in Australia as well as Tolpuddle
anniversary events in London and Dorset, so tonight will be a great chance to
catch him in an intimate venue.
Born in Weymouth and now living in Portesham, Grahamis an acclaimedsinger
and writer of historical, folk musicals. Accompanying himself on guitar or
English concertina, he has earned a reputation for quality performance, at
festivals and arts venues at home and abroad.

His own songs such as 'Tom Paine's Bones' and 'Tolpuddle Man', have been
enthusiastically adopted by the folk community around the world and recorded
byseveral leading British folk artistes, including Roy Bailey, Dick Gaughan
and most recently The Shee.

For this Bridport Museum concert, Graham willinclude a wide range of subjects
from our amazing local history including the Captain Swing Riots, The
Tolpuddle Martyr's Oath and thefeared invasion of Napoleon Bonaparte. With
village stories of witchcraft and 'overlooking', learned from his own family
and with tales of the workhouse, crime and punishment and the Bridport dagger,
this will truly be an evening of Darkest Dorset.

Bellowhead
...support Belshazzar's Feast

...not so much a big band as a small independent country!

In three years, eleven piece folk-big-band Bellowhead have exploded onto the
festival scene and fast become one of the most talked about bands on the
contemporary folk circuit, becoming Best Live Act winners of Radio 2's Folk
Award two years running.
A multi-instrumental band they ooze an eclectic musical mix which is exciting,
intoxicating, slightly sinister and also deeply funky. They must be seen to
appreciate the full and impressive flow of their talent and range, steeped in
English tradition.
Above all this is a BIG band - highly entertaining, full of wit and surprise
with an alternative slant.

Jackie Oates and Band

It is a real pleasure to have Jackie back at the hall, following past
performances with Phil Beer and Reg Meuross. Jackie was born in 1983 in
Cheshire and from an early age she was immersed in Traditional music as both
of her parents were keen singers and musicians. Jackie's brother is Jim Moray,
who played to a packed audience at the Hall earlier this year. The family
moved to Stafford in 1986 and Jackie began her own musical career. At the
age of 18, Jackie moved to Devon to study English literature at Exeter
University. It was at this time that she decided to commence a full time
musical career. In 2004, Jackie joined Rachel Unthank and the Winterset and
remained with the band until 2007.

Since then, Jackie has toured extensively and released two excellent albums.
She is a fine singer and fiddle player and was given the Horizon Award at the
BBC 2009 Folk Awards (so, yet another winner playing at the Hall this year!).
The gig will be to promote a new album called Hyperboreans, which was launched
last month. This album was produced by her brother, Jim Moray.

The band line up is as follows: Jackie Oates (voice and fiddle); James
Dumbleton(guitar, mandolin, shruti, Cornish drum ), Sille Ives (bowed lyre,
hurdy gurdy and fiddle) and Laurel Swift (double bass and clog dancing). This
will be a night of folk music played with a youthful zest.

Stackridge

Following their fantastic performance here in September 2008, Stackridge are
back!
Formed in 1969 in Bristol, a disparate group of quirky individuals with a
shared sense of fun started touring. They were the first band to play at the
first-ever Glastonbury Festival. During the following years they toured
Europe with Jethro Tull, appeared on the Old Grey Whistle Test and played with
the "Big Stars" of the day, including Elton John. In 1976 they split up, due
to what was described as "musical directional difficulties." They reformed,
however, in 1998 and produced the excellent album, Something for the Weekend.
Once again, they disappeared for a few years before reforming. The current
line-up has the original front line of Andy Davis, James Warren, Mutter Slater
and Jim "Crum" Walters with a backing group of Glen Tommy, Andy Marsden, Sarah
Mitchell and Rachel Hall. Clearly, another night not to be missed!

The Hub, Verwood

Cara Dillon

Acclaimed Irish Folk singer Cara Dillon has one of those rare talents you only
come across a handful times in your whole life. Her staggeringly beautiful
voice has the ability to reach inside the soul of a song and imbue material
with not only profound sweetness but also poignancy and depth.
Born in Dungiven in 1975, she was brought up in a close musical family
immersed in the rich cultural heritage of her native County Derry. Having won
the All Ireland Traditional Singing Trophy aged only 14 she went on to sing
with Oige, De Dannan and then Equation. It was in this band that she met her
husband and musical collaborator Sam Lakeman. The combination of Cara's
expressive vocals and Lakeman's rippling piano and fresh production squeezed
new life into ancient material. Their original songs sit happily alongside the
traditional, reinforcing the debt they owe, whilst pointing to a distinct and
distinguished musical identity all of their own.
It's Cara's unrivalled vocal talent and Sam's musical and arranging skills
that have seen them signed to major record labels since they were 19. First,
Blanco Y Negro (Warners) and then the enviably hip Rough Trade Records who
released her three solo albums to date, earning astonishing critical success
and showering her with countless awards and accolades.
Whether she's singing her native traditional songs of lost love and
emigration, or their original compositions, you will be hard pressed to find a
more emotive and captivating performer. Cara Dillon is at the very top of her
field and one has the feeling she'll be there for a very long time.

Mawkin: Causley

Not many bands can lay claim to being nominated for a prestigious BBC Folk
Award before they've even released an album, but Mawkin:Causley can.
Mawkin:Causley are brothers James and David Delarre, Danny Crump, Alex
Goldsmith (all previously known as Mawkin) and widely acclaimed Devon singer,
Jim Causley (Under One Sky / Devil's Interval).

With a heady mix of richly melodic vocals, melodeons, electric bass and
& acoustic guitar, they breathe youthful vigour and considerable energy into
their folk-inspired music. As a testament to the impact they have made after
less than 18 months together, not only were Mawkin:Causley nominated for Best
Group at this year's Folk Awards but their music has also been heard
frequently on Radio 2, with a seal of approval from Bob Harris and Mike
Harding, and also from the station usually more at home with indie rock
artists: 6Music.

From the Festivals - Jane Taylor, Nick Wyke & Becki Driscoll

Jane Taylor

When a song called Fall on Me was played on Johnnie Walker's Drive Time show
on BBC Radio 2, he was inundated with e-mails wanting to know who this new
singer songwriter was, where they could find out about her, and most
importantly would he please play more.He had so many requests that he plugged
her website the next day, and informed the listeners that it was taken from
Montpelier, a dˇbut album by a singer-songwriter called Jane Taylor who was
from Bristol, and who had released her album under her own label, Bicycle
Records. One live Radio 2 session later, and a distribution deal with Pinnacle
followed, alongside a national release of the album and support slots with
Bill Wyman, Jools Holland, Paul Buchanan, Seth Lakeman and Paolo
Nutini.Having just recorded her second album with Mercury nominee Producer
Colin Elliot, one of Bristol's finest singer- songwriters is truly on her way,
with another Johnnie Walker Show live session on the
cards.http://www.janetaylor.co.uk/

Belshazzar's Feast

A really warm welcome back to the two Pauls who were last with us in 2008.
Back in 1995, Paul Hutchinson (accordion) and Paul Sartin (oboe, violin and
vocals) shared a musical passion borne out of the desire to earn sufficient
money to support their extravagant lifestyles. Their amazing musicianship,
coupled with wry humour, stunned audiences around Europe and The States.
After a brief sabbatical, they're back! Their music is breathtaking and
wickedly inventive and the between-times interchange as intelligent and
hilarious as the music.
Paul Hutchinson is a member of the innovative and progressive folk trio,
Hoover the Dog (on our most wanted list at the Hall!) and Belgian band,
Fulsux. Paul is a seasoned accordion tutor for, amongst others, Folkworks and
the University of Limerick.
Paul Sartin is also a member of BBC2 Folk Award-winning big band, Bellowhead,
and English music trio, Faustus. Paul combines his busy performing career
with teaching and outreach work at St. Edward's School, Oxford, and many
community based organisations.
